DATA

The following visualizations use data from the Midlife in the US (MIDUS). Overall, women are more likely than men to contact family and friends. From a lifespan perspective, people’s connectedness first decreases between age 25 and 45 and then increases between around age 45 and 70. In terms of support, women are more likely than men, and older people are more likely than the younger to say they can get help from family and friends when needed. Some interesting generational shifts emerge in community outreach. Between the 1990s and 2010s, Americans are replacing religious activities with non-religious community activities. Although people today are less likely to reach out to their neighbors than in the past, they contribute more time to volunteering.”
