Well, according to a new survey from the Indexed Annuity Leadership Council, our biggest fear is running out of money. Twenty-five percent of Americans are worried about that. And it’s not the first survey to show that trend.

Baby boomers closing in on the traditional retirement years often seek purpose and a paycheck in a second career, also known as an encore experience, next chapter or unretirement. Whatever the term, nonprofit work — focused on addressing society’s pressing needs and promoting arts and culture — has a particular allure for many in this group.

“People want to give back; they want that social impact in the next phase of their life,” said Kate Schaefers, a career and leadership coach in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area. “They also turn the three-legged retirement stool — Social Security, personal savings and retirement savings — into a four-legged stool by adding paid work.”

There’s a new take on those post retirement years. “A Gift of Time,” a new study from Allianz Life Insurance Co. says Americans are embracing the opportunity to make up for those decisions they regret, such as the college they attended or the career they chose.

Allianz Life commissioned a study of 3,000 Americans and found that around one in three respondents said they had some major life regret — whether it was their choices in education, career or where they lived. While that may sound depressing, the survey also had a more heartening finding. More than nine in 10 Americans said they’d welcome the chance to live an extra 30 years. The best part? They’d use their years to chase their dreams and literally live like there’s no tomorrow.
