Old Dogs, New Tricks

The motto of Peace of Mind Dog Rescue is “Helping senior dogs and senior people.” Founded in Pacific Grove, California, in 2009, Peace of Mind relies on older volunteers to help care for, foster, and sponsor the adoption of thousands of dogs — with specific focus given to senior dogs as well as younger dogs surrendered from senior guardians. Around two-thirds of volunteers who donate their time to the rescue are over the age of 55, says Carie Broecker, cofounder of Peace of Mind Rescue, and many are over 70. And the rescue mission goes both ways: In addition to rehoming older dogs when necessary, Peace of Mind also helps older adults live with their dogs as long as possible, stepping in to support owners by walking their dogs, providing veterinary care, and even offering financial assistance for the pet’s care.
