Originally from São Paulo, Brazil, João hold a B.A. in Economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (2017) and a Ph.D. in Sociology of Education from the New York University (2023) where he was also a postdoctoral associate at the Institute of Human Development and Social Change. In his research, João uses innovative computational approaches – such as agent-based modeling and machine learning – to analyzes educational organizations and ways in which their practices and decisions contribute to (or mitigate) the social stratification of educational opportunities across class and race lines.
As a New Map of Life fellow, João works on a project led by Professor Mitchell Stevens to study how higher education institutions (alongside other organizations) can better serve the educational needs of adult and working learners.
