A NEW MAP OF LIFE: ENGINEERING CHANGE
November 4-5, 2021

Sponsored by Russ Hill and Tushara Canekeratne

Dear Colleagues,

In 2018, with the help of many of you, the Stanford Center on Longevity launched an initiative called A New Map of Life, based on the premise that dramatic increases in life expectancy call for equally momentous and creative changes in the ways we lead our lives. On the basis of multi-year analyses of central life domains, we argue that not only can we meet the challenges longer lives present, we also can use added years to improve quality of life at all ages – if we act now. Core insights derived from the initiative are:

  • Age diversity is an economic and social net positive.
  • The status of long-lived populations demands investments in children, with investments in the youngest among us delivering big returns.
  • The alignment of health spans with life spans in entire populations is key to success.
  • The enormous potential of science and technology to address problems of aging demands substantial investment.
  • Workplaces and working lives exert profound effects on well-being across adulthood and thus represent ideal settings to improve life trajectories.
  • The strong association of education to success in later life coupled with rapidly changing worlds underscores the need for continued learning throughout life.
  • Climate change and built environments exert profound effects on longevity, attesting to the need to limit toxic exposures and increase protections.
  • Longer lives require supports for a range of transitions shorter lives never afforded, such as exits and reentries to work, changing family structures, and returning illness to good health.

Meeting the challenges of longevity is an all-hands, all-sector undertaking, requiring the best ideas from entrepreneurs, governments, academia, and philanthropy. The purpose of this convening of experts, sponsored by Russ Hill and Tushara Canekeratne, is to identify the next steps needed to make the most of added years of life.

We look forward to seeing you all on November 4th and 5th.

Sincerely,

AGENDA
