Project: “Impact of emotion and cognition on health-related decisions
in everyday life”

Primary Mentor: Laura Carstensen, PhD, Fairleigh S. Dickinson Jr. Professor in Public Policy, Professor of Psychology; Director, Stanford Center on Longevity

Tammy English received her PhD in Psychology from the University of California, Berkeley in 2008. Her research is focused on emotion and emotion regulation across the life span. Older adults tend to prioritize emotion-related goals, which may provide for greater emotional well-being in the moment, but also may limit information-seeking and bias attention and memory away from potentially important negative information. In her SCL project, Dr. English examined how age-related shifts in emotion regulation and cognition impact health-related decisions in everyday life and the decisions of infirm adults. Ultimately, this research may help older adults make more informed decisions with desirable outcomes, and have implications for promoting healthy behavior in everyday life.
