Consulting Research Scholar

Susan is a Consulting Research Scholar at the Stanford Center on Longevity, working on a project to teach digital literacy to older adults, especially those who vote. Before coming to the Center, Susan was a Fellow at the Stanford Distinguished Careers Institute, where she studied the interaction between social media and democracy and the history of disinformation and fake news. She has become a passionate advocate for increasing public understanding of how digital platforms work and re-evaluating the legal and economic framework in which these platforms operate.

Susan was a partner in the firm of Munger, Tolles & Olson, where she worked on lawsuits arising out of the BP oil spill and other complex litigation around the country.  During her 35-year career, Susan also represented indigent convicted felons on appeal, defended that practice at cocktail parties, taught appellate advocacy at UCLA and Loyola Law Schools, and wrote articles for local news publications on interesting ways to spend time with two young boys.

Susan has devoted substantial time to community causes, including forming a non-profit to support a local bookstore in the face of Amazon’s trek towards world domination, and lobbying and fundraising to create a skatepark for neighborhood kids, despite community protests that the park would become a hotbed for organized crime.

Susan received her J.D. from Stanford Law School and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo.  Her hobbies include walking vacations and visiting cathedrals.
