REBOOT, REWIRE OR RETIRE? PERSONAL EXPERIENCES WITH PHASED RETIREMENT AND MANAGING A LIFE PORTFOLIO

Anna Rappaport

What retirement planning tips can you learn from a 78 year-old actuary who has worked with retirement plans for over 40 years? What are the strategies she has used to plan her own retirement?

Anna Rappaport is an internationally recognized researcher, consultant, author, and speaker on a variety of retirement planning topics. Anna is a past-president of the Society of Actuaries and is the chair of its Aging and Retirement Research Initiative Steering Committee.

Recently Anna shared her personal perspectives and experience on retirement in a guest post written for the Nerd’s Eye View by Michael Kitces, the influential blog for financial advisors. Her post focused on the non-financial aspects of retirement, which she believes are just as important as creating financial security in retirement.

Anna advocates developing a diversified, four-part “life portfolio” consisting of:

  • Health
  • People (family, friends, professional contacts)
  • Pursuits (work, volunteering, hobbies, community activities, travel)
  • Places (home and community)

Her wisdom can help older workers and retirees prepare for an enjoyable and fulfilling retirement, and she provides invaluable insights into steps employers and financial institutions can take to support their retirees and customers.
