The SCL Global Aging Program offered a practicum to students interested in pursuing topics related to economic and political aspects of global aging. The practicum was structured as an internship that involves the student in day-to-day work on SCL projects. Assignments included completing literature searches, compiling articles and documents, writing summaries, collecting and organizing data, and creating graphic displays.

Specific projects for Spring 2009 included the following:

1. World and regional demographic maps

Create world maps of key demographic variables, such as median age, fertility, % 65+, using newly released 2008 UN data. Update maps in previous briefing and create new world and regional maps to highlight how key demographic variables diverge. Use Mapland software with Excel. Prepare short written summary (1-2 pages) of key points. Provide detailed data files and documentation.

2. Global rankings on key demographic and economic indicators

Create a comparative reference document ranking the UN countries on key demographic and economic indicators, such as GDP, fertility rate, median age, growth in working-age population, and labor force participation. Download and organize UN and World Bank data using Excel; create rankings and compile a report of comparative rankings. Work with SCL staff to produce a formal publication-quality report for distribution. (Update and expand August 2005 report)

3. Country Demographic Profiles– Annotated graphic and tabular overviews

Produce country and regional demographic overviews using Excel and PowerPoint templates. These overviews will become part of our reference library and will be the basis for future analytical reports and briefings. The graphic and tabular displays can be completed using Excel templates and macros. The narrative highlights page and annotations of key graphs will require additional research.

Students are expected to work approximately nine hours per week during the 10-week quarter and will receive three credits. Students are expected to establish a regular schedule of work and have regular meetings with the supervisor.
