There’s a new president in office, and with him comes a new infrastructure plan, including a plan to improve care infrastructure. But what does the proposed plan entail, and can Washington come together on making it a reality? We got three perspectives. Aisha Adkins is a caregiver and constituency organizer at Caring Across Generations. David Dayen is the Executive Editor of an independent political magazine, The American Prospect. And Terry Fulmer is the President of the John A Hartford Foundation, dedicated to improving the care of older adults.

EXPERTS: AISHA ADKINS, DAVID DAYEN, TERRY FULMER

AISHA ADKINS, Constituency Organizer, is an advocate, storyteller, and caregiver based in Atlanta, Georgia. In 2013, she became a caregiver when her mother was diagnosed with Frontotemporal Dementia. She came to Caring Across originally as a care activist in 2016 and participated in the inaugural Care Fellowship in 2019. While earning her Master’s of Public Administration from Georgia State University’s Andrew Young School of Policy Studies, she fulfilled internship requirements as Organizing & Legislative Analyst. In addition to her policy work with CAG, she is also the co-executive director of millennial caregiver nonprofit Love Labor Project and sits on a number of boards for caregiver-focused projects and nonprofits. When she is not advocating for older adults and the people who care for them, she enjoys live jazz music, hanging out in parks with family and friends, and hopes to start a collection of Afro-surrealist art.

DAVID DAYEN is the executive editor of The American Prospect. His work has appeared in The Intercept, The New Republic, HuffPost, The Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, and more. He is the author, most recently, of Monopolized: Life in the Age of Corporate Power and Chain of Title: How Three Ordinary Americans Uncovered Wall Street’s Great Foreclosure Fraud, winner of the Studs and Ida Terkel Prize.

TERRY FULMER, PhD, RN, FAAN, is the President of The John A. Hartford Foundation in New York City, a foundation dedicated to improving the care of older adults. Established in 1929, the Foundation has a current endowment of more than $650 billion dollars. She serves as the chief strategist for the Foundation and her vision for better care of older adults is catalyzing the Age-Friendly Health Systems social movement. She is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine and recently served on the independent Coronavirus Commission for Safety and Quality in Nursing Homes established to advise the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. She previously served as Distinguished Professor and Dean of Health Sciences at Northeastern University. Prior, she served as the Erline Perkins McGriff Professor and Founding Dean of the New York University College of Nursing. She received her bachelor’s degree from Skidmore College, her master’s and doctoral degrees from Boston College and her Geriatric Nurse Practitioner Post-Master’s Certificate from NYU. She completed a Brookdale National Fellowship and she is the first nurse to have served on the board of the American Geriatrics Society. She is also the first nurse to have served as President of the Gerontological Society of America, which awarded her the 2019 Donald P. Kent Award for exemplifying the highest standards for professional leadership in the field of aging.
