class='avia_textblock  '   itemprop=\"text\" ><p>FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>March 6, 2017, Stanford, CA &#8212;\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>The Stanford Center on Longevity today named \u201cBiza Chair,\u201d a student entry from Brazil\u2019s Centro Universit\u00e1rio Newton Paiva as the winner of its Chair Challenge \u2013 a one-time special prize associated with its annual Design Challenge competition. Thanks to a generous donation from financial executive and educator Robert Pozen, the Chair Challenge offered a $7,000 award to a winning student design for a low-cost chair for the home that ameliorates lower back pain. The key judging criteria included overall design, science-based evidence of support for the back, and a projected consumer cost of less than $500.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI chose to offer this special award through the Design Challenge,\u201d said Pozen, \u201cbecause I&#8217;ve seen how effective it can be in fostering innovation through a competitive process and because so many elderly need a low-cost chair to reduce back pain.\u201d The Biza Chair team described their entry in the competition as seeking to provide ergonomically accurate support for older persons, based on clinical studies and in-lab experiments. \u201cBiza,\u201d they explained, is a colloquial term in Brazilian Portuguese for \u201cnana\u201d or \u201cgrandma.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the winning team\u2019s spokesperson \u201cThere currently aren&#8217;t enough options in the chair market that are ergonomically correct, particularly for the elderly. financial executive and educator Robert Pozen, the 2016-2017 Stanford Center on Longevity Design Challenge featured a special $7,000 award to a winning student design for a low-cost chair for the home that ameliorates lower back pain.<\/p>\n<p>In concert with this year\u2019s theme of \u201cInnovating Aging in Place\u201d, the Chair Design Challenge was conceived to bring both comfort and design to the home. This has led to my strong interest in public policy and a concern for helping people prepare for their future.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What led to your desire to foster innovation around chair design for the home?<\/strong><br \/>\nIn the summer of 2015 I had to undergo back surgery, which exposed me to the difficulty of lower back pain and how one\u2019s experience sitting can have a major impact on back health. In my work environment I am fortunate enough to have access to high-quality, well-designed chairs that adequately support the spine. But chairs like those often cost upwards of $2,000 and they are almost exclusively designed for office use. What\u2019s needed now is an emphasis on designing chairs for the home, where people \u2013especially those who are older and\/or retired\u2014spend a majority of their time sitting. And in particular, we need well-designed chairs that are affordable, around $500 or less, so that they can be available to the broadest spectrum of households.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How will a prize focused on healthy chair design drive the change you believe is needed?<\/strong><br \/>\nMy experience with the Stanford Center on Longevity Design Challenge is that students have enthusiasm, curiosity, and the drive to design solutions for aging well, once they are given the opportunity. I chose to offer this special award through the Design Challenge because I\u2019ve seen how effective it can be to foster innovation through a competitive process that rewards inventiveness and creativity. easy-to-use lifting seat device to assist older adults with sitting and\u00a0standing.<\/p>\n<p>Smart-Lift&#8217;s design is made up of three components: an ergonomic cushion, handles for support, and an electrically powered elevating system to assist in standing, and allow for safe sitting.<\/p>\n<p>The unit integrates into any chair or sofa. Users have full control over seat elevation with buttons embedded in the handles. Power system support is provided by a linear motion actuator which raises and lowers the seat as needed by the user, minimizing reality platform designed to improve the quality of life of older adults.<\/p>\n<p>Rendever&#8217;s VR experience allows older adults to visit their childhood homes, travel the world, and connect with family and friends. The content is intended to inspire more conversations, and brings new stimulating experiences to the daily lives of users.
