Mark Clapper

Emeritus, Kaiser San Diego Orthopaedic Department

Mark Clapper, MD previously served as Chief of the Kaiser San Diego Orthopaedic Department supervising 40 orthopaedic surgeons with 25 physician extenders, responsible for the musculoskeletal care for 600,000 patients. Mark was recognized as a Kaiser top administrator for his work increasing access, improving quality and overall department efficiency.

A US Naval Academy graduate, Mark received his undergraduate degree in Oceanography and following graduation trained as a nuclear submarine officer. He served on two US Navy nuclear submarines in various leadership roles including Navigator and Operations officer of the USS SEAWOLF (SSN 575). Following submarine service, he completed medical school at the Uniformed Services University and Orthopaedic Surgery residency training at the Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, Maryland. He served as a surgeon in the US Navy caring for active duty, retired and military families including deploying with the US Marine Corps to Saudi Arabia and Kuwait for Operation Desert Shield/Storm. Following retirement from naval service, Mark joined Kaiser Permanente where he practiced for 20 years and continued to be involved with the Navy Orthopaedic Surgery Residency program.
