MITCHELL STEVENS

Stanford University

Professor of Education

Mitchell Stevens is an organizational sociologist with longstanding interests in educational sequences, lifelong learning, alternative educational forms, and the formal organization of knowledge. Dr. Stevens is a co-director of the Stanford Center on Longevity, and he co-directs the Stanford Pathways Lab where their mission is to understand how aspirations, identities and learning opportunities coevolve to shape lives and life chances. Stevens uses the term “learners” for individuals who view education as something that takes place throughout a life and career – not as something that stops after high school or college.
