Based on research conducted at Stanford and elsewhere, SCL is coordinating a number of major strategic projects on issues in longevity. Undertaken with partners in the public and private sectors, these projects combine research findings with efforts to promote cultural change. Major projects typically begin with an intensive retreat, each of which will generate a white paper identifying critical issues, recommending further research, proposing specific social changes and analyzing the economic impact of research and policy recommendations. SCL Major Projects include the following:
- Major Project on Mobility- It has been universally recognized that mobility is critical to all aspects of human life and is of primary importance in maintaining quality of life with aging. The overall goal of the SCL’s major project on “Mobility” has been to identify and evaluate challenges that older individuals face in terms of mobility, ranging from declining muscle strength and increasing joint stiffness that limits normal activities, to transportation design issues within the community and across the country that are not suited to the needs of the elderly. read more
- Major Project on Financial Security - Across the same years that life expectancy dramatically increased, both retirement age and savings rates decreased. Although the trend toward early retirement has leveled, personal savings rates among Americans remain low.read more
- Upcoming Major Projects - The SCL undertakes two to three major projects per year, yet continually identifies new projects for the future. Although we invest primarily in major projects, we seed projects related to our future Major Projects. This practice will help us decide whether to pursue them and begin to generate research interest among faculty affiliates. read more
